Buffy star Charisma Carpenter backs Ray Fisher over Joss Whedon abuse allegations
By Shaun Stacy
Actress Charisma Carpenter is speaking out about her own negative experiences working with Joss Whedon in the wake of Ray Fisher’s allegations concerning the director’s abusive nature on the set of 2017’s Justice League film.
On Wednesday, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel alum tweeted a letter of support for Fisher, detailing her own story of dealing with Whedon’s abusive onset tactics. Carpenter starred as Cordelia Chase on Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the show’s first three seasons and then continued on the Angel spin-off series for another four seasons. Whedon was the creator and show-runner for both series.
The entirety of her letter can be found on her Twitter. In it, she details the cruelty she experienced at the hands of Whedon following her real-life pregnancy, which occurred during the fourth season of Angel, as well as the “wake up call” she received from the Time’s Up movement.
Carpenter accuses Whedon of “abuse[ing] his power on numerous occasions” and offers a first-hand account of his treatment of her as a working actress, joining the chorus of those who have accused him of creating a hostile professional environment. She alleges that the creator made “passive-aggressive threats to fire her,” and was “casually cruel,” often “pitting people” against each other on-set.

Carpenter states that she was part of WarnerMedia’s Justice League investigation in an effort to support and defend Fisher’s allegations. The firing of the actor from the upcoming The Flash film was apparently the last straw for her.
In regards to Fisher’s firing, she said, “Although I am not shocked, I am deeply pained by it. It troubles and saddens me that in 2021 professionals STILL have to choose between whistleblowing in the workplace and job security.”
