It was announced on Friday that the supernatural Syfy drama Wynonna Earp has not been renewed and is slated to end at the conclusion of season four. The fourth season picks back up with the show’s final six episodes on March 5, which places the series finale at April 9.

The decision to end the series comes after production on season four was derailed following a lack of funding from IDW Entertainment, the company that owns the rights to the source material. Cineflex Studios stepped in as co-producer on the series, giving showrunner Emily Andras the green light to move forward.

On the topic of the series coming to a close, Andras stated:

"“I’d like to thank our wonderful cast and crew, all of whom were instrumental in bringing Wynonna Earp to our loyal and passionate audience. We couldn’t be prouder of these last six episodes on Syfy, and are thrilled to share them with our beloved fans, who have changed our lives forever.”"

Why Wynonna Earp’s renewal reversal is surprising

This marks the latest in renewal reversals, as Syfy had originally announced a fifth season for this series. The deal seemingly fell through due to NBCU’s reorganization of priorities, where they are looking to invest in more of a streaming format, not cable distribution. While there are currently no plans to film a fifth season, it is possible that the show could be picked up by another network (a la One Day at a Time).

Wynonna Earp has garnered a fervent cult following, thanks to it’s unconventional heroine and LGBTQ+ representation. The show has won two People’s Choice Awards for Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show and has been nominated several times as an Outstanding Drama Series for the GLAAD Media Awards. The show regularly landed on lists that celebrated one of the best shows that television has to offer.

The first half of season four left all of our characters at a crossroads, with Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) and Nicole (Kat Barrell) officially engaged. The gang became a found family for Rachel (Martina Ortiz-Luis), who moved into the homestead. Meanwhile, Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) and Doc (Tim Rozon) took a step back in rekindling their relationship following an apparent betrayal by Wynonna.

There’s been a lot of cancellations this season, but this one hurts the most. The first part of season four dropped during the pandemic, giving fans one of the only scripted television shows that released brand new content during that time. How such a beloved, award-winning series can be cut down while generating buzz is a complete mystery.

We stand with other Earpers and hope that the show may get picked up by another network or streaming platform. (It would be a perfect fit over at Hulu. Just sayin’.)
