Chadwick Boseman left us in September 2020 after battling colon cancer, but his presence can still be felt through his incredible legacy of films and philanthropy. Now that award season is in full swing, Boseman has posthumously set a Screen Actors Guild Awards record with 4 nominations in the film category in one year.

SAG announced nominations for the 2021 awards on February 4 and Boseman was named in four categories. He’s not the first actor to have four nominations but he is the first to have four film nominations, stemming from his work in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Da 5 Bloods.

Boseman was included in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture category for both films. He was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and he was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for Da 5 Bloods.

Landing four SAG nominations and setting a record is just another way that Boseman’s legacy continues to grow despite his absence.

Chadwick Boseman SAG Award nominations just the start of the accolades

With COVID-19 continuing to change the landscape of Hollywood and Hollywood’s longstanding awards season traditions, it feels like nominations are overlapping. SAG Award nominations were just released on February 4 and Golden Globe nominations were announced on February 3.

Boseman received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his work as Levee in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and there’s little doubt that this is just the tip of the iceberg as more award nominations are announced in the coming weeks.

It’s tremendously sad that Boseman is not here to partake in the celebrations of his work, but in a small way these nominations keep his legacy alive so that his legend lives on in perpetuity.
