Christopher Plummer, known for his roles in films like The Sound of Music and All the Money in the World, has died at 91 years old. Deadline reports that the actor passed away peacefully at his home in Connecticut. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elaine Taylor.

Plummer had a long and lauded acting career, one that spanned almost seven decades and saw him winning a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his 2012 hit, Beginners. He also took home two Emmys for his roles in Madeline and The Big Event, along with two Tonys for his work on Barrymore and Cyrano. His most recent projects included the hit 2019 film Knives OutThe Last Full Measure, and television series Departure.

Born in Toronto, Canada in 1929, Plummer went on to portray characters both on the stage and onscreen. It’s clear from the reactions to his passing that his roles impacted many.

Plummer’s fans, friends, and co-stars took to socials after the news broke, paying homage to the late actor and recounting their experiences working with or watching him act.

In a statement obtained by Variety, Plummer’s manager, Lou Pitt, wrote:

"“Chris was an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession with great old fashion manners, self deprecating humor and the music of words. He was a National Treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots. Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come. He will forever be with us.”"

Marvel star Chris Evans, who worked with Plummer on Knives Out, wrote on Twitter, “This is truly heartbreaking. What an unbelievable loss. Few careers have such longevity and impact. One of my favorite memories from Knives Out was playing piano together in the Thrombey house between set ups. He was a lovely man and a legendary talent.”

The Academy also paid homage to the actor on its official Twitter account, highlighting his biggest roles and stating how much he’ll be missed.

The overwhelming display of affection for the late actor seems to confirm The Academy’s sentiment. May he rest in peace.
