Black Panther director and writer Ryan Coogler is going beyond the film’s sequel and bringing Marvel fans a Kingdom of Wakanda spin-off series at Disney+. Deadline reports that the new show is part of a five-year television deal with Coogler’s company, Proximity Media, which he founded alongside Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, Ludwig Göransson, Archie Davis, and Peter Nicks. Under the deal, Coogler can also develop content for other divisions at Disney, so we can expect to see more projects from him in the future.

What characters Coogler’s new series will follow or what plot points it will tackle remain under wraps, though the entire direction of Marvel’s Phase 4 currently remains a mystery at this point. It would be great to see Black Panther personalities like Shuri, Nakia, and M’Baku again — but whether any of the film’s cast will return for the Disney+ show is still unknown.

Coogler is also working on a Black Panther sequel currently, which reports suggest will see Shuri playing a bigger role. Following Chadwick Boseman’s tragic passing last year, it’s unclear how Marvel intends to handle T’Challa’s character and kingdom, though the studio has confirmed that they won’t be recasting the role.

On the topic of expanding his relationship with Disney, Coogler expressed excitement about the television projects to come. Per Deadline, he said:

"“It’s an honor to be partnering with The Walt Disney Company. Working with them on Black Panther was a dream come true. As avid consumers of television, we couldn’t be happier to be launching our television business with Bob Iger, Dana Walden and all the amazing studios under the Disney umbrella. We look forward to learning, growing, and building a relationship with audiences all over the world through the Disney platforms.”"

Prior to working on Black Panther, Coogler’s portfolio includes Fruitvale Station and Creed. It’ll be interesting to see what else he comes up with under this exciting new deal. A Wakanda spin-off is definitely a promising start!
