Marvel boss Kevin Feige was blown away by Eternals pitch
It’s nice knowing that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige can still be stunned by a good pitch after all of the success he’s seen, and that’s exactly what happened when he heard the pitch for Eternals. At the center of that praise is Feige’s utmost respect and appreciation for director Chloe Zhao and her vision for the movie.
Eternals, one of the many movies in Marvel’s Phase 4 lineup, is similar in its scope to Guardians of the Galaxy in that they’re both epic stories with a memorable cast of otherworldly characters. The Eternals are an immortal race that were created by the Celestials. Caught in a never-ending battle against the evil Deviants, the Eternals are charged with protecting humanity.
The twist is that they have been living on Earth for millennia and the events in Avengers: Endgame have brought them out of the shadows and into the fore.
Zhao, who is known for her work on the indie film Nomadland, wanted to keep the focus grounded despite working with a cast of god-like characters. In that way, the film maintains a deep sense of its sci-fi roots while also connecting with the deeper humanity in the story.
Kevin Feige Loves That Director Chloe Zhao “Gets” Eternals
Feige, who has been at the heart of Marvel’s incredibly successful cinematic universe for years, knew from the moment that Zhao pitched the story that she was the one to bring it to life.
“Not only does Chloe make remarkable, small, personal movies in a remarkable, small, personal way, but she thinks in grand, cosmic, gigantic terms, which fit perfectly with what we wanted to do. Eternals is a very big, sweeping, multi millennia-spanning story. And she just got it,” he said.
As with all epic Marvel tales, the actors bringing the Eternals to life is a who’s who of Hollywood talent including Angelina Jolie (Thena), Richard Madden (Ikaris), Kumail Nanjiani (Kingo), Lauren Ridloff (Makkari), Salma Hayek (Ajak), Kit Harington (Dane Whitman), Bryan Tyree Henry (Phastos), Lia McHugh (Sprite), Don Lee (Gilgamesh), Gemma Chan (Sersi) and Barry Keoghan (Druig).

Feige’s praise for Zhao and her vision for the movie make it even harder to wait for the film’s release. Thanks to COVID-19, Eternals was pushed from 2020 entirely, landing on a new November 5, 2021 release date. With that kind of praise, though, it sounds like it’s going to be worth the wait.
