Freeform has officially renewed The Bold Type for a fifth and final abbreviated season, which began production in January and will consist of only six episodes. It’s slated to air later this year.

Described as a “brand-defining show” for the former ABC Family network, The Bold Type follows the lives and loves of best friends Jane (Katie Stevens), Kat (Aisha Dee), and Sutton (Meghann Fahy), who all work for a Cosmo-like women’s magazine in New York City called Scarlet. The official synopsis for the show’s final season states that the trio is “on the brink of defining who they really are and how best to leave their mark on the world.”

Season 4 was forced to wrap prematurely in July of 2020, losing the two final episodes of its 18-episode order as a result of the COVID-19 shutdown that swept across shows like wildfire. The substitute season finale found Sutton returning to her hometown after fighting with her husband, Richard (Sam Page), which led to the couple separating.

While drowning her sorrows in her alcoholic mother’s fridge, Sutton slept with her married ex-boyfriend. Bisexual Kat texted her conservative girlfriend Eva that things between the two of them were too complicated to continue their relationship. Finally, Jane went against her boss’ decision to squash an inappropriate workplace story.

An official video featuring the introduction of the actors at season 5’s first virtual table read has been released, which you can view below.

The Bold Type was often praised for its feminist themes throughout its run, but the show’s writers drew some ire from fans during the later part of the fourth season, with many claiming that the characters, specifically Sutton and Kat, were making decisions that pretty much destroyed several previous seasons’ worth of character development.

Additionally, Dee took to social media in the summer of 2020 to criticize the lack of diversity behind the cameras on the series, claims which her co-stars backed.

The Bold Type also stars Melora Hardin, Matt Ward, and Stephen Conrad Moore, who are expected to also return for the final season. It has also been revealed that Nikohl Boosheri will reprise her role as fan-favorite character Adena El-Amin for multiple episodes of the fifth season.

It’s also worth noting that in the table read video above, previous series regular Sam Page was not included–could this mean Sutton and Richard are done for good?
