It’s official at last: Netflix has renewed its hit period romance Bridgerton for a second season of society balls and scandalous affairs.
It’s official: Netflix has renewed its hit period romance Bridgerton for a second season.
Truly, few should be surprised by this news. The streamer announced just a couple of weeks ago that the period drama was its fifth-biggest launch of all time, so the question of a season 2 renewal was really always just a matter of when, rather than if.
Netflix published the news as a charming lilac scandal sheet from our favorite society gossipmonger, Lady Whistledown, who tells us that Bridgerton season 2 will go into production in the spring of 2021 and that it will focus on the story of Daphne’s brother Anthony.
At least, that’s what we’re all assuming that “This author has been reliably informed that Anthony Bridgerton intends to dominate the social season” line means anyway.
Of course, that would be in keeping with the series’ source material. Bridgerton is based on a series of eight novels by author Julia Quinn, each of which is focused on a particular one of the titular siblings. The first book, The Duke and I, focuses on Daphne’s romance with Simon Basset and provided the bulk of the material for the series’ first season.
The second is called The Viscount Who Loved Me and follows the story of Anthony’s search for a wife. Ostensibly, that means season 2 will have a similar focus and star Jonathan Bailey will step into the spotlight.

There is, of course, no word on when season 2 might arrive on our screens. In fact, Lady Whistledown would very much like us to not pester her about the particulars. And that’s fine, for now – it’s extremely unlikely we’d see anything before the end of the year in a best-case scenario. (This show is massive in terms of both scope and production.)
So let’s just take a moment to be happy that more Bridgerton is coming…eventually. Patience, as Lady Whistledown reminds us, is a virtue after all.
