Ryan Reynolds delivered a very special message to an 11-year-old Deadpool fan battling cancer.

Times are hard, but some celebrities appear to be doing everything they can to spread some joy. That includes Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, who surprised an 11-year-old fan battling cancer with a video message last week. Brody Dery, who has been struggling with Hodgkins Lymphoma and Crohn’s disease, was surprised as ever to see one of his favorite superheroes take up that mantle in real life. (Because, let’s be real, Reynolds’ video has big hero energy.)

In the video message, which was posted on Twitter by Caden Fanshaw from CKPG News, the actor offered love and support to his young fan, pushing him to “hang in there” and stay positive:

"“Brody, it’s Ryan Reynolds. I just heard a little about your story, and I just wanted to send you this video and let you know that I’m thinking about you and that I’m sending you tons of love. And I’m sending you strength — whatever strength I’ve got. And just, man, you have a ton of people in your life that love you so much. And I know you’ve been going through it. I know it’s been a challenge lately. But you know something, Brody? You’re just the man for the job. “So, I’m sending you lots of love. I hope I get to meet you in person one of these days, and hang in there. Okay pal, bye.”"

It’s a sweet thing to do, and according to Brody’s mother, Randi Dery, he’s watched the video multiple times since receiving it. Speaking with CTV News, she revealed that things have been difficult for her family recently, especially since Brody was diagnosed with lymphoma last year after already battling Crohn’s disease. Randi emphasized that he’s been a “trooper” throughout the chemotherapy treatments, though, and confirmed that Reynolds’ message succeeded in cheering her son up.

“His jaw hit the floor,” Randi said. “He keeps saying, ‘I feel special – I feel like I’m the movie star.'”

With any luck, things will start looking up for Brody and he’ll get to meet Reynolds in person after all. (We’ll be crossing our fingers for it.)
