Gwendoline Christie tapped for role in Netflix original The Sandman
Game of Thrones and Star Wars alum Gwendoline Christie joins cast of The Sandman
Netflix is forging ahead with its high stakes adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, and Game of Thrones alum Gwendoline Christie has signed on to join the cast. Filming is already underway in the UK, but two very key roles have been open and there’s lots of speculation that Christie could be coming to the series in one of those roles.
The Sandman is a project that has been in various stages of development for years. Gaiman started writing the comic book in 1989, and since then it has grown a cult following and spanned several graphic novel compendiums, re-issues and spin-offs. The story follows Dream (also known as Morpheus) and the other Endless (Death, Desire, Delirium, Destiny, Despair and Destruction) as he recognizes certain truths about the universe and the inevitability of change.
As of this writing, the roles of Death and Desire have not been cast and there is speculation that Christie will play one of them. At the moment, the only confirmed casting is Tom Sturridge in the role of Morpheus/Dream.
Netflix jumped on the opportunity to bring The Sandman to life. The timing was right, too, as DC Comics now falls under the purview of HBO Max. The Sandman had been written under DC’s Vertigo imprint, but the powers that be allowed Netflix the chance to bring the book to life and it has Gaiman’s blessing.
Gaiman will serve as an executive producer, and he also helped write the pilot episode with fellow executive producer David S. Goyer and showrunner Allan Heinberg. The series will feature 11 episodes with a very talented lineup of Jaime Childs and Mike Barker behind the camera.
The Sandman is the perfect landing spot for Christie after her high-profile roles in both Game of Thrones and Star Wars. Fans couldn’t get enough of her characters in both franchises, and The Sandman presents another opportunity for the statuesque actress to shine.
