CW forced to cancel the planned crossover between Batwoman and Superman & Lois

With the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down production all over Hollywood and upending filming schedules all over the world, the CW announced that plans for the crossover between Batwoman and the all-new Superman & Lois series have been shelved. Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that the crossover event due to air later this year has been cancelled amid pandemic concerns.

Fans of the DC Comics shows on the CW raved about last year’s five-part Crisis on Infinite Earths event that featured all of the CW series and cameos galore. Reports started coming out in May that plans for a crossover in 2021 would need to be adjusted due to the pandemic’s impact on filming.

The 2021 Arrowverse crossover event was supposed to feature Javicia Leslie’s Batwoman meeting up with Superman and Lois Lane. With Leslie taking over the title role in Batwoman’s sophomore season and the premiere of Superman & Lois, the modified crossover would have made a lot of sense.

Sadly, as the pandemic continues to wreak havoc all around the world the risk of bringing two film crews together is too great. Getting different casts and crews together was a challenge before the pandemic, but it’s an even bigger challenge now.

Showrunner Caroline Dries says that she is hopeful that Supergirl’s Melissa Benoist will be able to make an appearance on Batwoman at some point after Supergirl ends its run this year. “Obviously, I love Melissa, but I would love to have Kara on our show and teach [Leslie’s Ryan Wilder] a thing or two, or see her in the Batcave.”

As with so many things in 2020 (and now in 2021), it’s best to take everything day by day. With so many shows in the Arrowverse on the CW there is plenty of room for crossovers as soon as it’s possible to bring everyone together safely. For now, fans can look forward to the season 2 premiere of Batwoman on January 17 and the series premiere of Superman & Lois on February 23.
