Mark your calendars: The Israeli neo-noir thriller Losing Alice starring Ayelet Zurer is coming to AppleTV+ this January.

AppleTV+ may not be the most popular or well-known streaming platform as yet., but it’s quietly compiling quite an impressive array of buzzy, offbeat series (See also: Dickinson, Ted Lasso) and prestige dramas (The Morning Show).

The streamer is now going international, bringing the critically acclaimed international drama Losing Alice to the platform this January.

The eight-episode series stars actress Ayelet Zurer as the titular Alice, a 48-year-old female director who feels like her previously successful career has grown stagnant since she’s taken time off to raise her family.

But when she meets Sophie, a mysterious young screenwriter with a shocking new script, she sees an opportunity to revitalize her professional life. But as Alice slowly becomes obsessed with Sophie’s life and work, issues of jealousy, ambition, and the problematic ways that women are treated in the entertainment industry as they age intertwine to create something dark and dangerous.

Zurer is probably best known to American audiences as Vanessa, wife of Kingpin Wilson Fisk on Marvel’s Daredevil, a character that walked a careful line between sympathetic and dangerous. A talented character actress, her other notable roles, include Man of Steel, Munich, and the Israeli drama Hostages.

The official synopsis for Losing Alice describes the series in starkly dramatic terms.

"“Losing Alice” is a thrilling cinematic journey that uses flashbacks and flash-forwards in a satisfyingly complex narrative that takes the viewer through the conscious and subconscious of its protagonist’s mind. The series follows Alice (played by Ayelet Zurer), a 48-year-old female film director, who feels irrelevant since raising her family. After a brief encounter on the train, she becomes obsessed with a 24-year-old screenwriter femme fatale, Sophie (played by Lihi Kornowski), and eventually surrenders her moral integrity in order to achieve power, relevance and success. Through the prism of this female Faust, the series explores issues such as jealousy, guilt, fear of aging, and the complex relationships women have among themselves and each other. But above all, “Losing Alice” is a love letter for the still-too-rare female director."

Losing Alice will officially premiere on Friday, January 22 with the series’ first three episodes, and new installments will release on Fridays thereafter.
