With Deadpool 3, Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth will join the MCU. (But don’t worry, his antics will still be R-rated.)

The recent X-Men movies to come from 20th Century Fox have mostly been met with disappointment from Marvel fans. Deadpool has been the exception to the rule, with Ryan Reynolds’ take on our favorite Merc with a Mouth receiving plenty of praise. For that reason, the Disney-Fox merger left fans questioning the future of Reynolds’ Deadpool and whether the character would eventually join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And as of today, we have our answer: Deadpool 3 will indeed take place in the MCU.

During an interview with Collider, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige revealed the news, affirming that, although the sequel may not arrive for quite some time, it will be part of the franchise’s cinematic universe when it does.

Feige also addressed a major concern surrounding Disney’s ownership over the Deadpool movies: whether it will affect the rating. Fans have been worried the company might try to tone down Deadpool’s signature humor — humor that tends to be pretty explicit. Luckily, there’s good news on that front.

Feige assured fans that when Deadpool does arrive, it will maintain its R rating — so no need to worry about a watered down mercenary:

"“It will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan’s overseeing a script right now… It will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor. We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life.”"

As Feige alluded to, the script is currently being put together, with Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglinand Wendy Molyneux penning it. And even if we won’t see Deadpool 3 until 2023 at the earliest, it’s a relief to know Disney won’t be dropping the series altogether — or changing it up so much that it’s unrecognizable.
