J.K. Rowling is applauded for her transphobic blog post by the BBC. This is why we must call her out.
When it comes to J.K. Rowling, fans of the Harry Potter series have had a lot to unpack this last year especially and now that the BBC is applauding her? We need to call her out more.
The BBC has decided to honor J.K. Rowling for her controversial blog about the trans community. Editor Amol Rajan applauded Rowling’s bravery for the post, despite the fact that he wasn’t taking any of the “viewpoints” but here’s the problem with that: You calling her “brave” for being transphobic is not good for anyone involved.
PinkNews explained the situation in more detail and we need to continue to call it out as fans of the Harry Potter series. Rowling sees herself as being brave. That much is clear in the way she’s doubled down on the transphobia and how she has continued to try and make it seem like she’s just sharing her viewpoint.
What she’s doing is harmful to the entire trans community. It’s not “brave”, it’s dangerous. Trans people are murdered every day. They’re killed for simply being who they are and J.K. Rowling taking to the internet from her privileged billionaire tower to talk about how she feels “attacked” simply by their existence? There’s nothing brave about it.
We should not share her views but we need to continue to talk about JK Rowling and to continually call her out. By calling her out and consistently pointing out that she’s harming the lives of every single person in the trans community is important and we cannot sit and act like we are fans of the Harry Potter series and blindly support her when she’s targeting a community of people and putting them in danger.
We need to be better and be there for the trans community.
