Best new television shows of 2020: Everything’s Gonna Be Okay
Platform: Freeform
Cast: Josh Thomas, Kayla Cromer, Adam Faison, Maeve Press
This comedy series Everything’s Gonna Be Okay was created by Australian comedian Josh Thomas, who plays Nicholas, a neurotic entomologist who assumes guardianship over his two teenage half-sisters following the death of their father. Hilarity ensues as Nicholas adjusts to being the “grown up,” while sisters Genevieve (Press) and Matilda (Cromer) struggle to come to terms with their new family dynamic. Matilda is autistic and Genevieve is perpetually angry at the world, which causes them difficulties in both their school and home lives. Adam Faison rounds out the cast as Nicholas’ new boyfriend, who acts as Nicholas’ moral compass for most of the series.
Simultaneously heartwarming, heartbreaking, and laugh-out-loud hilarious, Everything’s Gonna Be Okay is a refreshing, original spin on a modern family. Thomas writes and acts with a tremendous amount of wit, while Cromer (who is autistic herself) and Press take turns stealing the show with each side-splitting situation they get themselves getting into. The series has a big heart and lots of comedy in it, but it also has serious, heartfelt moments between the three siblings as they grieve in their own different ways. In May 2020, the series was renewed for a second season, which is expected to begin production early next year.
