What year even is it? Aly & AJ are working on a new album

Aly & AJ have left many fans wondering what year it is after announcing a new album on the horizon.

Twenty-twenty has been one of the strangest years to date, and some of the latest news in music will definitely have millennials scratching their heads: Aly & AJ, best known for their 2005 single “Walking on Sunshine,” are returning to the music scene with a new album coming out in 2021.

If your first reaction was to wonder what year it even is, you’re not alone. This musical duo hasn’t released a new album in 13 years — not since their album Insomniatic hit music stores.

Of course, the sisters haven’t been completely absent from the public eye over the past decade or so. Aly appeared on The CW’s iZombie from 2015 to 2019, while AJ starred on ABC’s Schooled over the past two years. They also released EPS while building their acting chops, but this new release will be the first full album from them in quite some time.

Very in line with 2020 trends, the pair announced their return via TikTok, revealing that their upcoming album will tackle themes of “California, sisterhood, and optimism.” What their sound will be like after all this time remains to be seen (or heard, really), but that description suggests fans can continue to expect upbeat, catchy jams from the two. They did mention, however, that the album was inspired by the tumultuous events of the past year — but it seems their approach to coping with the chaos is to try to spread positivity and bring people together.

Although Aly & AJ didn’t share the title of their upcoming album, they did share that it will be arriving sometime during spring 2021. Starting in December, the pair will begin dropping new singles from the collection, so we may just get a Christmas gift in the form of a new Aly & AJ song. (We’ll be adding that to our wish list, for sure!)
