5 things we can’t wait to see in The Umbrella Academy season 3
With The Umbrella Academy officially getting a third outing, what are we excited to see from future episodes?
It’s official! The Hargreeves siblings are returning for a third season of The Umbrella Academy, and after that wild second-season cliffhanger, thank the heavens. The show’s season two finale left fans with plenty of questions — most notably what the heck the Hargreeves did to their timeline after saving the world — and now we can rest knowing we’ll eventually get our much-needed answers.
Netflix revealed the news, tweeting, “They’re not done yet!” with an image of the number three and the Umbrella Academy logo.
(The streamer also revealed that Umbrella Academy profile icons are now available, so, if you haven’t set your avatar as one of the Hargreeves siblings yet, what are you waiting for?!)
The third season of The Umbrella Academy is slated to head into production in February, so it may be a while before fans see the final product. That said, we do have an idea of where the story is going — and here’s what we can’t wait to see when the new episodes do arrive!
The Sparrow Academy
Given that The Umbrella Academy’s second season introduces the Sparrow Academy — the group of children Reginald Hargreeves adopted and trained in the alternate timeline created by our heroes — it’s a given that we’ll get to learn more about this group in the show’s upcoming season. This means we’ll have all-new characters to follow, and we’re likely to see some interesting new powers.
In the comics, the Sparrow Academy kids don’t initially appear to pose any threat to the Hargreeves children, but whether Netflix will follow that storyline or create its own remains to be seen. Either way, it’ll be fun to see how the siblings interact with these newcomers — and it also begs the question of what parts of the Hargreeves children’s pasts have been altered in this new timeline.
There are so many questions to answers on this front, and that’s going to be a top priority in the show’s third season. If only it would get here already!
Alternate Universe Ben
Ben Hargreeves is perhaps the most mysterious of the siblings in The Umbrella Academy’s first season, mostly because he’s long dead. With his ability to communicate with the dead, Klause can still see his brother — but he mostly serves as an inner voice to his brother’s chaotic, drunken antics. At least, until season two arrives.
During season two, Ben gets his own storyline, a surprising but welcome development. Unfortunately, that storyline involves Ben eventually sacrificing himself to save his family. Just when fans think they’ve seen the last of him, though, he appears in the final scene of season two, revealing that Ben had somehow become a member of the Sparrow Academy when the timeline was tampered with.
Season three will have to flesh out who this new Ben is and how he differs from the one we’ve come to know and love. It’ll also present the Hargreeves with a tough challenge: balancing their real past and the Ben they grew up with and this new reality, one where Ben is a totally different person. Oof.
More Hargreeves Bonding
During the first season of The Umbrella Academy, the Hargreeves siblings are more at odds with one another than a supportive family. This is especially true for Vanya, who spends most of the show’s first run as the black sheep of the family. But even the rest of the siblings regularly went long periods of time without speaking to one another. And, as evidenced by their reunion when Reginald dies, they mostly just argued when they did come together.
Season two changes this, facing the siblings with the reality that they actually do care for one another, even through all that sarcasm and banter. The most touching moment is probably when they all join together to back up Vanya, but the sibling bonding is even apparent in smaller moments, like when Klause, Vanya, and Allison get drunk and have their musical number.
These sibling moments are the heart of season two, and we definitely want to see more of them in the show’s third season. Fingers crossed the show keeps building on that growth.
More Superpowers
On top of the Hargreeves family finally working together, a major highlight of The Umbrella Academy’s second season is getting to see the gang in action — and having them use their powers more. Although Number Five, Luther, and even Diego were always open about using their powers, that wasn’t true of every character in season one.
In fact, Allison spends season one believing that her “I heard a rumor…” power is a curse and refusing to use it, something she eventually gives up in season two. Vanya spends the majority of season one believing she’s powerless, but she finally learns to master the enormous amount of energy inside her in season two. And while Klause attempts to drink away his ability to commune with the dead in season one, his ability takes on new forms in season two.
We’d love to see the Hargreeves continue to grow alongside their powers, and we definitely won’t complain about more fun action scenes in season three.

What Becomes of the Commission
Following the second season finale, it appears that The Handler is well and truly gone, and that the Commission will be taking on a new form moving forward — one with Herb at the head. (What’s left of its members is another story, but…)
Lila, however, remains a wild card after season two, and could easily become one of the show’s next villains if she wanted to. It’s unclear where her character disappears to after discovering her adoptive mother’s betrayal and rejecting the Hargreeves’ offer to join the family. It’s probably safe to say the audience hasn’t seen the last of her, though, and she’s certainly learned enough to take control of the Commission if she chose to.
This portion of the story is pretty open-ended heading into season three, and that’s not to mention the new timeline, which could certainly have altered the Commission and its present-day endeavors. It’ll be interesting to see how The Umbrella Academy handles what’s left of the organization.
