A Nancy Drew spin-off is apparently in the works at The CW and to be honest, the idea of the Drewniverse is pretty darn exciting.

Move over, Arrowverse: The CW’s Nancy Drew is coming for your connected narrative universe crown. There’s a spin-off of the dark supernatural mystery series in the works at the network, from bosses Melinda Hsu Taylor and Noga Landau.

The spin-off will be titled Tom Swift and will be based on the classic book series from the Stratemeyer Syndicate, the publishing company that also gave us Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, The Bobbsey Twins, and more.

According to the logline, the spin-off will center on the titular Tom Swift, a gay Black man and billionaire inventor who is thrown into the world of sci-fi conspiracy and unexplained phenomena after the shocking disappearance of his father. As Tom goes on a quest to unravel the truth, he will fight to stay one step ahead of an Illuminati-scale group hell-bent on stopping him. His missions will require his genius and flair for innovation guided by love, romance, friendship and the mysteries of the universe yet-unsolved.

Swift himself will first appear as a secondary character in Nancy Drew season 2 when it returns in January, as he crashes into the world of one of Nancy’s (Kennedy McMann) investigations – an event that she interprets as supernatural and Tom believes to be cosmically paranormal.

The potential series will debut as a backdoor pilot at some point during the second season and a separate script for a Swift pilot is reportedly already in the works.

Nancy Drew’s first season embraced its dark and supernatural roots, as Nancy and her friends attempted to solve a present-day murder alongside the years-old mystery of the fate of a teenage prom queen. The series has everything from ghosts to vengeful sea spirits, and it’s honestly a delight from beginning to end.

And while at first glance it may not seem like the ideal cornerstone for a new television franchise, everything about this series thus far has been surprising in the best possible way. So let’s see what the folks behind it do next.
