Regina King is heading to The CW to executive produce Slay, a drama set to join The CW’s roster of supernatural shows.

Calling all fans of the supernatural! The CW is taking us back to Virginia, but it’s not to Mystic Falls (thank goodness!). The network is developing Slay, a drama executive produced by the illustrious Regina King and her sister, Reina King, through their company Royal Ties Productions.

The series will be written by Julian Johnson with Pam Veasey, the former showrunner of CSI: NY, supervising. According to Deadline:

"“Slay centers on Carson Jones, a bold, witty teenager with afro puffs, leather boots, seventies cool, and — thanks to her mother’s ancient African bloodline — supernatural gifts and the responsibility to use them to protect Virginia’s Historic Triangle (one of the most haunted areas in the country) from the forces of darkness.”"

We have to say, we’re tentatively excited, Culturess readers. The CW seems to be making a concentrated effort to bring Black talent into the fold of its network. If picked up, Slay will join All American, Batwoman, Black Lightning, and Charmed as the fifth show led by a Black actor on The CW.

The network was under fire over the summer thanks to several Black actresses speaking out about the lack of behind-the-scenes diversity on its shows and a desire to see more robust storytelling for Black characters.

With Slay‘s addition, The CW could do a Sunday to Thursday block of television airing one show with a Black lead a night if they wanted to. It’s an exciting thought, one that should be commonplace considering the wealth of talent across racial groups and backgrounds that has yet to be given a chance, but we digress.

While The CW will never be able to make up for Bonnie Bennett’s treatment on The Vampire Diaries, Slay could be a step in the right direction for the network. After all, the King sisters will be involved, which means the likelihood of Carson Jones going the way of Sleepy Hollow‘s Abbie Mills is low.

We’ll keep you posted on Slay news when we hear more, but for now, we’ll be imagining what this series may have in store for us with Emmy-award winner Regina King adding a touch of her magic.
