A Discovery of Witches heads to Elizabethan England in season two, coming in January 2021.

“Everyone craves it, everyone fears it, everyone fights for it. Everyone wants power.”

So begins the NYCC panel for A Discovery of Witches season two. Executive producer Lachlan Mackinnon and author Deborah Harkness moderated a panel that included the first teaser trailer for the new season, a look at the 16th-century sets, and a Q&A panel with the cast.

Harkness and Mackinnon were joined by stars Teresa Palmer (Diana Bishop), Matthew Goode (Matthew Clairmont), Steven Cree (Gallowglass), Adelle Leonce (Phoebe), and Edward Bluemel, who introduced his character as Dr. Marcus Whitmore to emphasize his title. (Naturally, this led to a great deal of laughter from his co-stars.)

Season two will feature 10 episodes, which is two episodes more than the first season. Shadow of Night, the second book in the All Souls Trilogy, covers a journey across the centuries and a massive amount of story. Mackinnon noted in the fan Q&A that they had to go with 10 episodes because the material in the book was “so rich” that fewer episodes wouldn’t have done it justice.

Season two of A Discovery of Witches will arrive on Sky One in the UK in January and will premiere in the U.S. and Canada on the AMC Networks (AMC, Sundance, and Shudder) soon thereafter.

This is great news for American fans of the novel who had to wait months between the U.K. premiere and the U.S. debut of season one, and it’s a smart move for Sky One because bootleg copies of the show were rampant across the internet as eager fans sought any means available to watch.

Between the cast’s enthusiasm and the incredible effort to bring the world of Elizabethan England to life, there’s no question that season two is elevating the already impressive legacy of the first season and sets things up nicely for the rest of the All Souls Trilogy and the subsequent books in the series.
