Highlights from the Star Trek NYCC panel include Captain Janeway’s return, more Jonathan Frakes, and new Discovery footage from season 3.

The Star Trek panel at this year’s virtual New York Comic Con provided a ton of announcements, updates, and new details about the franchise’s existing series.

Executive producer Alex Kurtzman, set the scene early for a big reveal.

"“This captain was held to a different standard than her predecessors. She was asked to embody an inhuman level of perfection in order to be accepted as ‘good enough’ by the doubters but showed them all what it means to be truly outstanding. We can think of no better captain to inspire the next generation of dreamers than this one.”"

And then you heard the famous voice of Captain Janeway herself, played by Kate Mulgrew: “Permission to come aboard” (loved that bit).

Yes, Star Trek Voyager’s Mulgrew will be reprising her role as Janeway on Star Trek: Prodigy, the animated series being helmed by Kevin and Dan Hageman. Prodigy will focus on a group of unruly teens who seek out adventure in space after getting their hands on a derelict Starfleet ship. lt’s currently set to debut on Nickeledeon in 2021

An animated version of Janeway?

“I don’t know,’” admitted Mulgrew in the virtual panel. “But as I was talking to Kurtzman on the phone, long-dormant longings to restore her started to stir and I thought, ‘This could be heavenly.’

“I was the first female captain,” Mulgrew continued. “And now I’m gonna be the first children’s captain. What could be better than that?”

Very exciting news indeed.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

But that wasn’t the only blast from the past at this panel. It was also revealed that Jonathan Frakes’ Will Riker will be back again on the second season of Star Trek: Lower Decks.

After saving the day in the season finale cameo with his super cool ship in the series finale, “No Small Parts,” Lower Decks creator Mike McMahan assured fans that we would be seeing more Riker “at the beginning of next season.”

“Mike McMahan made it happen,” Frakes himself said during the panel, about how his cameo developed. “We’re at a sushi bar in Toronto and he asked me if I wanted to be on the show. I said ‘Of course I want to be on the show.’ Then when we got into the studio, he encouraged me to do what I’ve wanted to do for 35 years, which is let Riker be a wild, insane character.”

Hey, the more Star Trek crossover love, the better. We’ll take it!

Discovery unveiled a scary scene

Not to be left out, and especially with the long-awaited S3 premiere just around the corner (Oct. 15!), Star Trek: Discovery dropped a sneak peek scene that had us on the edge of our seats.

Michael Burnham looks to be in a whole heap of trouble!
