HBO Max’s new streaming series Haute Dog is perfect for cuddling up on the couch with your pooch and forgetting about the real world for a few hours.

We’re well into six months of staying home and social distancing with no end in sight. It’s safe to say this is the new normal for Americans and many others around the world. It can be hard to stay positive, especially in a relentlessly weird news cycle and a looming presidential election.

Enter Haute Dog, HBO Max’s new, delightfully silly dog grooming reality competition show. With a scant six half-hour episodes, Haute Dog is a breeze to watch. A mix of Nailed ItProject Runway, and The Great British Bake-Off, the show follows three groomers each episode competing for “Best in Show.”

Comedian and host Matt Rogers (Gayme Show and host of popular podcast Las Culturistas) manages a remarkable feat. With a sparkling and sunny disposition, Rogers never appears to look down on the show or be snarky, while also winking at its many silly moments.

Rogers’ chemistry with fellow co-hosts and judges is a high point. Comedian and “couture expert” Robin Thede (A Black Lady Sketch Show) and grooming expert Jess Rona also provide commentary and jokes as the groomers shape up Poodles, Pomeranians, Westies, and more.

Beyond the witty banter and somewhat campy aesthetic, Haute Dog, like many other recent reality competition shows, is a feel-good fight. Like Making It or Bake-Off, the competitors are rarely, if ever, cutthroat or rude to one another, making it a stress-free environment to bask in for a few hours.

And also like those shows, the groomers’ artistry is real. Regardless of how much of a dog person you are, it’s easy to see the groomers’ talents shine when a dog goes from scruffy to drag queen or matted to spotted leopard.

Haute Dog is family-friendly, breezy, and overall delightful. It may even make you weepy, too, with moments that highlight rescue dogs and the people who take care of them.

A show for any dog lover, Haute Dog is perfect for cuddling up on the couch with your pooch and forgetting about the real world for a few hours. So sit back, cuddle up with your pup, and take your mind off of everything for a little while as you stare into the faces of some of the most adorable dogs out there.
