JoJo’s newest single, “The Change,” calls listeners to become the change they want to see — and it’s become the official anthem of the Biden-Harris campaign.

The 2020 election has celebrities coming out in support of political candidates and calling for change, and JoJo is the latest musician to send a message of social progress through her art. In her latest single, “The Change,” written by Diane Warren, vows that she’ll “be the change” she wants to see — and pushes listeners to declare the same.

“I’m gonna be the change / I’m gonna start with my heart / I’m gonna be the light, be that light, my own light,” JoJo states in her new song, and with the country so divided, it’s easy to see why her words may resonate with people. She also emphasizes the importance of reflecting on how you can make the world a better place, rather than focusing primarily on the wrongdoings of others.

And JoJo’s call for change doesn’t just paint a picture of a more hopeful future for listeners hoping to see the country head down a different path. It’s also become the official anthem of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ political campaign, which is a pretty exciting development for the 29-year-old singer. JoJo’s “The Change” will now be featured during Democratic events and in their advertisements. She’ll also be performing it on The Late Show on October 22.

What’s funny about “The Change” being picked up by the Democratic party is that JoJo has openly admitted she’s not the biggest fan of bipartisan politics.

“I don’t like politics,” the singer told Variety. “But I care so much about people and I believe in the goodness of humanity, and that’s why I wanted to be involved in this song. Not because I feel particularly partisan, but because I think that this time at least calls, to me, to do that, more so than I ever have.”

“When I said that I’m not political, what I mean is that I’m disappointed by the fact that we still have a two-party system,” she added. “And I just think that there has got to be a better way; I would like to see that reimagined. But I think that the past four years have brought so much division, it’s made it so people can’t and don’t even talk to each other — don’t even see each other as human anymore — and it’s sad. So I believe in that which can connect all of us. And I think music does a great job of doing that.”

JoJo did understand, however, why Biden’s campaign would choose the song to support its message. Given that the Democratic frontrunner is calling for change and reform — and knowing that it’s “going to take every single individual to decide to act on that change that they want to see in our country” — her latest single pushes home the notion that everyone has to act if they want to see a better tomorrow.
