Marvel has found its Kamala Khan! Industry newcomer Iman Vellani will play the lead role in the Ms. Marvel series coming to Disney+.

Production on Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series may be slow going thanks to COVID-19, but planning for future series is still underway — and that includes Ms. Marvel. And the show took a huge leap forward this week when the studio finally cast its lead role. That’s right, industry newcomer Iman Vellani will portray Kamala Khan on the small screen — and while we know little about her acting just yet, we’re feeling pretty good about the choice.

Although Vellani has yet to star in a Hollywood production, she does have some experience working within the industry. She was a member of the Next Wave Committee at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2019, helping to tag films the group felt would resonate with other young film lovers.

Now, with her first major role, Vellani will bring Marvel Studios’ first Muslim hero to the small screen — and later, the big screen, if Kevin Feige’s comments about Ms. Marvel eventually appearing in MCU films are true.

While there’s no word on when Ms. Marvel might arrive on Disney+, we know the series will follow Pakistani-American teenager Kamala Khan who has superhuman abilities. How she’ll factor into the greater MCU remains to be seen, but it’ll be nice to have another teenage character join the Avengers team. Lord knows Peter Parker could use some superhuman friends.

In addition to casting its lead, Ms. Marvel also found its first slate of directors earlier this month, which includes Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, Farah Goes Bang and television director Meera Menon, and documentarian and activist Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Bisha K. Ali , known for Four Weddings and a Funeral and Sex Education, will write the series.
