A Family for Alex

Chyler Leigh is responsible for one of the most poignant performances of the entire series, specifically her work in dealing with Alex’s coming out story. Viewers of the show joined Alex on her journey toward self-discovery and finding love. We thought that happened when she started a relationship with Detective Maggie Sawyer (Floriana Lima) in season two, giving way to the ship name of “Sanvers.” Alex and Maggie were one of the most stable couples on the show — until they weren’t. At the beginning of season three, while discussing wedding plans, the two come to an impasse as Alex realizes she wants to have kids but Maggie doesn’t. Thus, ending Sanvers and breaking the hearts of a lot of fans of the show.

Alex was even willing to go as far as to give up her job at the DEO to be able to provide a safe life for her child. She was approved by an adoption agency and then … nothing. The storyline was put on the back burner for a couple of seasons, but along the way, Alex fell in love again, this time with James Olsen’s sister, Kelly. While the fandom was resistant at first to a Sanvers replacement, they eventually learned to love the couple, even though they didn’t share as much screen time together as Sanvers did.

With the literal destruction of the DEO at the end of season five, season six of Supergirl is the perfect time to finally have Alex adopt a child along with Kelly. And perhaps even have a wedding by the end of the show? We’d love to see it.
