Why we have to reclaim Harry Potter in our own ways and how to do that
Recently the talk of the town has been about Harry Potter fans and how do they cope with the fact that J.K. Rowling isn’t someone to look up to. And there are ways to reclaim the series for yourself.
The Harry Potter has been ours for a long time. Meaning that it has belonged to the fans years before J.K. Rowling started to reveal herself. We created worlds in our fanfiction writing, explored different characters and what they meant to us and made it our own.
And now, we have to keep doing it. That’s how we can reclaim the series and make it ours without connecting back to Rowling and her views. Look at it this way: The Marauders are huge characters within the fandom but in the actual series? They don’t have that much time. We are the ones who gave them a bigger life with our love for them.
But it’s important that we do reclaim the series because it does mean a lot to fans. Which is why this hurts so much. It’s like if the creators of our superheroes suddenly started hating a large part of their fanbase with no remorse.
It hurts. And I can only imagine how painful this is for fans who are a part of the LGBTQ+ community. So, we have to reclaim it for them and take it away from Rowling and her views. Sure, people will get mad because she did create the series but guess what? It hasn’t really been hers for years.
What many of us love about the series has come from the fandom, not from Rowling.
