Zendaya made history during this year’s Emmy Awards, becoming the youngest person to win a trophy for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

HBO’s Succession may have taken home the majority of awards in the drama category during the 2020 Emmys, but there was one pleasant surprise mixed into the group: Zendaya winning the trophy for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series. The 24-year-old star won gold for her performance as Rue Bennett in HBO’s Euphoria — and if you’ve seen her performance as the teenage girl struggling to overcome drug addiction, you’ll know the award is well deserved.

The unexpected win was exciting in and of itself, but there’s another reason to be celebrating Zendaya’s success: She made history last night. The actress is actually the youngest star to take home an award in this category, marking a significant milestone for her and the ceremony. (As Jimmy Kimmel put it, “She’s younger than Baby Yoda, and she already has an Emmy!”)

Even Zendaya herself seemed surprised by her win, and her virtual acceptance speech was full of enthusiasm as she tried not to cry over receiving the award.

Watch Zendaya react to her Emmy win below:

“To the incredible cast and crew of Euphoria, I’m so lucky to go to work with you every day, and I’m inspired by everything you do,” Zendaya said during her speech. “And to Sam Levinson, I appreciate you so much. You’re my family. I’m so grateful for Rue. I’m so grateful you trust me with your story. And I hope I can continue to do you proud.”

Rounding out her speech, Zendaya promised viewers that there “is hope,” even if now feels like a strange time to be celebrating. She also expressed how much she admires the other nominees in the Best Actress in a Drama Series category. Among those nominees were Killing Eve‘s Jodie Comer, Killing Eve‘s Sandra Oh, Ozark‘s Laura Linney, The Crown‘s Olivia Colman, and The Morning Show‘s Jennifer Aniston.
