The Obi-Wan Kenobi series coming to Disney+ has had a bumpy start — and the news that it will only be one short season has only added to the disappointment.

There are multiple Star Wars projects in the works at Disney+, suggesting that Lucasfilm’s television universe could become as huge as its film franchise. And one of the most-anticipated projects headed to the streaming platform is the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, which will see Ewan McGregor reprising his role as a younger version of Luke Skywalker’s mentor.

The series got off to a bumpy start, with Lucasfilm and Disney putting production on hold after scrapping the scripts written by Hossein Amini and announcing they’d be finding someone new to write the series. And although they found a new writer in Joby Harold, the COVID-19 health crisis has no doubt set the show back yet again.

As far as the plot goes, all we know is that the series will be set eight years after Revenge of the Sith, and show Obi-Wan on Tatooine. What he’ll be doing there — apart from watching over Luke — remains a mystery. Whatever he’s up to though, it’s going to be a short adventure. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy recently confirmed to The Wrap that this Star Wars series will only be one season long, officially marking it a limited series that will clock in at just four episodes.

“It’s been very exciting to see the talent that’s come in,” Kennedy said. “And we’re now developing the limited Obi-Wan Kenobi series with Deborah Chow, and she’s just been doing a phenomenal job.”

It’s a bit disappointing that the series will be so shortlived, and several news outlets have chalked it up to numerous delays. It’s possible that’s the reason behind the series’ length, but there’s also a chance Obi-Wan just doesn’t have that much story to tell. If anything that major had happened during his time on Tatoiine, it’s likely we’d have heard about it somewhere in the Skywalker Saga.

At this rate, we’re just lucky to still be getting this take on the Jedi Master’s story. There’s still no word on when we might see it, but confirmation that it’s still happening at all will have to do for now.
