Netflix has canceled The Society and I Am Not Okay With This after only one season — and fans are not happy about the decision.

With the COVID-19 production pauses and the financial issues that likely accompanied them, it feels like television shows are being canceled left and right these days. And Netflix just announced that two of its original series won’t be returning for second seasons after all: The Society and I Am Not Okay With This.

In particular, the cancellation of The Society came as a surprise, as the coming-of-age drama had already been renewed for a second season, with Netflix going back on its initial decision. It appears the cancellation is a casualty of the COVID-19-related delays, since the show was supposed to begin filming next month.

I Am Not Okay With This hadn’t been picked up for a second season officially, but given its popularity — and whispers that it would be getting a sophomore season — most fans assumed they’d have the chance to return to this world. Naturally, the disappointment was palpable after fans got wind of the bad news.

And it’s not just the potential of both series that has viewers outraged over their abrupt ends — though that certainly is part of it. It’s also the fact that both Netflix dramas put LGBTQ+ characters center stage in a way so many other television series and movies fail to. Fans have pointed out how unfair it is that those series are always the first to the chopping block — while lamenting the fact that shows like Riverdale and films like The Kissing Booth tend to see endless renewals.

As with other canceled shows before them (ahem, Anne With an E), the fandoms for both have rallied behind movements to save these new series, with #SaveTheSociety trending on Twitter and a petition to save I Am Not Okay With This created on change.org. It’s unclear if anything will come of these efforts, but we’ll cross our fingers.
