Freeform has pulled the plug on its mermaid drama Siren after three seasons, opting not to pick the series up for a fourth outing.

Sad news for fans of Freeform’s mermaid drama Siren – the series won’t be back for a fourth season.

The series followed the story of Bristol Cove, a small coastal fishing town in Washington state that’s rumored to be the ancient home of mermaids. The legend is proven correct with the arrival of Eline Powell’s Ryn, a mermaid who wreaks havoc in search of her captured older sister, who was taken by the local military.

The series also stars Alex Roe and Fola Evans-Akingbola as a pair of marine biologists who befriend Ryn, Ian Verdun as a deep-sea fisherman trying to find the truth of mermaids, Sibongile Mlamboand as Ryn’s sister Donna, and Tiffany Lonsdale as Tia, a mermaid who arrives from a colony beyond Bristol Cove in season 3.

Over the course of the show, the series narrative expands widely, featuring the arrival of more merpeople, dangerously increasing pollution, a surrogate baby, and a potential war against humanity. The season 3 finale – now series finale – features a long-awaited showdown between mermaids Ryan and Tia which, though satisfying, doesn’t really wrap the story up in a way that most fans will find completely satisfying as a permanent ending.

The ten-episode Season 3, which premiered back in April, saw significant, double-digit ratings losses when compared to its first two seasons, which may explain Freeform’s decision to cancel the show. Yet, according to TVLIne, the show still ranked highly in terms of both the demo and total audience. So, who knows, precisely, how – or if – these factors played into the network’s final decision.

The Siren cancellation news comes on the heels of a season renewal announcements for witchy Freeform drama Motherland: Fort Salem and freshman comedy Everything’s Gonna Be Okay.
