Netflix acquires multiple classic Black sitcoms, like Moesha and Girlfriends, adding some much-needed color to the streaming platform’s roster.

Netflix has acquired the rights to seven classic Black comedies including Moesha, Girlfriends, and Sister, Sister. Additional series include Half & Half, The Parkers, One on One, and the first three seasons of The Game.

The majority of these shows have never been available on a streaming platform, with the exception of Girlfriends and The Game, which had select episodes available to watch via CW Seed. Sister, Sister, Moesha, Half & Half, One on One, and The Parkers are not currently available on any streaming platform.

In a wonderfully nostalgic video, almost 30 original cast members of the seven classic shows helped make the announcement about their arrival on Netflix.

Stars appearing in the video include Tia Mowry, Tamera Mowry-Housley, Jackee Harry and Tim Reid (Sister, Sister); Shar Jackson, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Marcus T. Paulk (Moesha); Tracee Ellis Ross, Jill Marie Jones, Persia White, Golden Brooks, and Reggie Hayes (Girlfriends); Jenna Von Oy, Ken Lawson, and Dorien Wilson (The Parkers); Essence Atkins, Rachel True, Chico Benymon, and Valerie Pettiford (Half & Half); Pooch Hall, Brittany Daniel, Wendy Raquel Robinson, and Coby Bell (The Game); and Flex Alexander, Robert Ri’chard, Sicily Johnson, and Kelly Perine (One on One).

You can view Netflix’s announcement video below:

The shows will begin streaming on Saturday, August 1st with Moesha.

Additional release dates are as follows:

"The Game seasons 1-3 (Saturday, Aug. 15)Sister, Sister (Tuesday, Sept. 1)Girlfriends (Friday, Sept. 11)The Parkers (Thursday, Oct. 1)Half & Half (Thursday, Oct. 15)One on One (Thursday, Oct. 15)"

Personally, I think this is a step in the right direction for Netflix, who has come under scrutiny as of late for not showcasing the diversity that they claim to have. I am thrilled to see these celebrated shows finally getting the recognition they deserve, especially Girlfriends and Half & Half (which had the best opening credits).
