Jennifer Grey has landed a deal with Lionsgate to star in and executive produce a new dance film. Could it be the next Dirty Dancing?

A new untitled dance film is in development at Lionsgate, and none other than Baby herself, Jennifer Grey, will be at the helm. While details are scarce, we do know that the movie will be set in the 1990s and is possibly the next entry in the Dirty Dancing franchise. The first Dirty Dancing was released in 1987 and starred Grey as a young woman who falls in love with a dance instructor, played by Patrick Swayze, at a holiday resort during one hot summer of 1963.

Lionsgate made a less-impressionable sequel, titled Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, in 2004 with Diego Luna, Romola Garai, January Jones, and Sela Ward. Swayze also reprised his role of Johnny Castle for a cameo appearance in the film. Havana Nights only grossed about $28 million worldwide, while the OG movie raked in $218 million at the box office.

Dirty Dancing was the first movie to sell over 1 million copies in home videos and featured a multi-platinum soundtrack that also won an Oscar, Grammy, and Golden Globe for the original song “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” performed by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes. Grey herself was also nominated for a Golden Globe, along with Swayze, for Best Performance by an Actress and Actor in a Motion Picture–Comedy/Musical. The film obviously became a pop-culture phenomenon and catapulted both Grey and Swayze to superstardom.

Grey recently starred in the Amazon comedy Red Oaks, produced by Steven Soderbergh and David Gordon Green. She also had a featured role in the indie film Untogether, alongside Billy Crystal and Jamie Dornan. Other recent television credits include guest spots on The Conners and Grey’s Anatomy, as well as her role on David Milch’s John From Cincinnati on HBO. Unfortunately, if this is a new Dirty Dancing entry, it’s sad that Swayze isn’t here to return as well. (Swayze tragically passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2009.)
