Riverdale spin-off Katy Keene canceled after just a season at The CW

Katy Keene, Riverdale’s sparkling and more light-hearted cousin, has been officially canceled after just a single season on The CW.
Sad news for Katy Keene fans: The adventures of Katie, Josie, Pepper, and Jorge won’t continue next year. At least, not on The CW.
The series has been canceled after just a single season, likely due to low ratings and a modest performance on the CW’s digital platforms. (Supposedly, it ranked quite a bit lower than fellow freshman series Batwoman and Nancy Drew, which were both picked up for second seasons late last year.)
The show followed the adventures of the titular Katy Keene and her group of friends in New York City, as they all chased their dreams of love and career success. Though the series is a spin-off of popular teen drama Riverdale, the show featured a much lighter and more romantic tone, with stories focused on love and friendship rather than murder mysteries and drug rings.
Star Lucy Hale took to Instagram to share an emotional video announcing the series’ end.
The series marks the second CW cancellation in three years for Hale, who also led the similarly ill-fated (though really quite charming) Life Sentence in 2018. But, unlike that drama, the door might not be completely closed on Katy Keene just yet.
According to Deadline, Warner Brothers Television, who owns the show, plans to shop it around to other networks in an attempt to find it a season 2 home. Given the corporation’s close relationship with the recently launched streaming platform HBO Max, that’s generally seen as the most likely option. (HBO Max is already the streaming home of Katy Keene, as well as several DC Universe properties and many of the CW’s Arrowverse shows.)
Granted, that’s the same thing that many showrunners and producers claim in the wake of cancellations. But, the prospect doesn’t seem that far-fetched here, given Katy Keene’s Riverdale connections, and the fact that it comes from Berlanti Productions and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. (Plus, Hale herself has a huge fan following that’s stuck with her from her Pretty Little Liars days.) Surely, that has to be a recipe for success somewhere.
At least, one can hope.
