Thanks to COVID-19, The Handmaid’s Tale won’t return to Hulu until 2021, but the season 4 teaser trailer looks amazing.

Sad news for fans of Hulu’s groundbreaking adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale: The show won’t return this year.

Filming on the award-winning series’ fourth season was slated to begin this past March. But, like so many others, the production was was forced shut down in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic that swept the globe earlier this year.

The cast and crew only managed to get in two weeks of filming before that happened, which means there’s been very little progress made on the upcoming season. (Though, apparently, the writers’ room is still chugging along remotely.)

The darkest timeline, we are in it. But, there is at least one smidge of light.

Hulu, perhaps feeling guilty about announcing the fact that fans would have to wait an additional year for the show’s return, did drop the first trailer for season 4. And it’s great – even if most of it is cobbled together out of footage from the series’ first three seasons. (After all, it’s not like they filmed much new stuff!)

For those who don’t remember, season 3 ended with June once again failing to escape from Gilead. Though she did help a plane full of young girls get out of Gilead, so that’s something. The final image was one of June felled by a gunshot wound and ultimately carried to safety by her fellow handmaids.

But it’s not like the fight to end the totalitarian regime in Gilead is over – a fact that’s more than evidenced by the action-packed season 4 teaser. Blessed be the squad, indeed.

The third season of The Handmaid’s Tale was fairly controversial among fans, as June was forced to make darker and more morally questionable choices in the name of bringing down the oppressive Gilead regime. What she’ll be forced to do in season 4 is anyone’s guess.
