Millie Bobby Brown to play Enola Holmes in new Netflix film

Another book adaptation is hitting Netflix this year and this time it’s a retelling of Sherlock Holmes. The film is based on the Enola Holmes series of novels by Nancy Springer.

Who is Enola Holmes? She is the 16-year-old sister of the famous consulting detective. Stranger Things star Millie Bobbie Brown is playing Enola while Henry Cavill takes the role of Sherlock and Sam Clafin plays their older brother, Mycroft.

Let’s talk about this casting for a minute. I am a huge Sherlock Holmes fan. I have multiple copies of the books and try to look out for and watch or read every retelling I can find. I’m definitely checking out the Enola Holmes books before this movie hits Netflix.

But if you told me to pick an actor that is least likely to play Sherlock Holmes, I could make a list and Henry Cavill would definitely be on it. He doesn’t fit the description of Holmes whatsoever. And yet, I am entirely too excited to see his portrayal.

Sure, there have been good-looking Sherlocks in the past, but Henry Cavill is freaking Superman! He is Geralt of Rivia! Those two roles don’t scream sleuthing detective who is a borderline encyclopedia. According to Entertainment Weekly, Enola Holmes will premiere on Netflix sometime in September and despite my wariness of this casting decision, I will be counting down the days.

It will also be fun to see Brown get the chance to use her British accent for once.

The film will be an adaptation of the first book in the series, The Case of the Missing Marquess, where Enola, on her 16th birthday (although she is fourteen in the books), goes looking for her missing mother (played by Helena Bonham Carter). If anyone was suited to playing Sherlock Holmes’s mother, it is Helena Bonham Carter.

Enola makes it her mission to find her mother while her older brothers want to send her to finishing school. Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes are nothing if not men of their time AKA sexist as hell.

And while we all may be excited about the film, but the Arthur Conan Doyle estate is definteily not. According to Variety, they’re suing Netflix, stating that the film is infringing on the Sherlock Holmes copyright. They go on to say that the version of Sherlock in Enola Holmes depicts him as “warm and friendly” and that that characterization is too close to the Holmes in the final ten stories.

As nothing has come of it yet, it looks like Enola Holmes will stream on Netflix as scheduled.
