Fans of Marvel’s Agent Carter may have had a bone to pick with the ending of Avengers: Endgame. But how does Enver Gjokaj, who played Daniel Sousa, feel?
Look, I’m not here to preach about how we need more of Marvel’s Agent Carter.
Two seasons just wasn’t enough for what was a solid show giving backstory to how SHIELD was created and letting national treasure Hayley Atwell grace our screens every week. (No, I don’t care that she’s British, she’s a national treasure.)
For the seven of us who actually watched Marvel’s Agent Carter, you probably had two distinct reactions while watching Avengers: Endgame last year:
- Holy crap, it’s Jarvis!
- Wait, didn’t Peggy end up with Daniel Sousa?
For those who didn’t watch Agent Carter: The season two finale ended with Peggy and her partner, Agent Daniel Sousa, finally kissing after two seasons of will-they-won’t-they tension. It was a happier ending for Peggy, who spent two seasons battling against misogyny as well as grieving Steve Rogers.
Of course, when the credits rolled on Endgame, many of us were a little confused and sad for Sousa. How would this affect him? Does it even matter?
Thankfully, EW got the scoop for us, finally, from the man himself, Enver Gjokaj. How does he feel about that ending?
"“To be honest, it’s so clear in the writing and it’s so clear in the way Hayley plays it that [Steve] was never gonna be replaced,” Gjokaj tells EW. “I think that was the beautiful tragedy of his attraction to her is that he knew that and he wanted to be with her anyway. He knew he was always going to be second place, and I think that’s a little heartbreaking about Sousa.”"
Sousa was always used to playing second fiddle in the show, since he had a leg injury and was at the bottom of the totem pole at the SSR already. Much like Steve Rogers, he always believed in Peggy and tried to help whenever he could.
I had plenty of feelings when Agent Carter was canceled and I still harbor a bit of a grudge. But having Daniel Sousa show his face again on Agents of SHIELD makes it sting a little less. Watching the team fangirl over Peggy’s former partner may very well turn out to be a highlight of this final season.
Mostly we’re just happy someone remembers Agent Carter exists. You can stream episodes of the show on Disney+; you can always watch Avengers: Endgame there as well, and Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD premieres new episodes Wednesdays at 10pm on ABC.
