Daniel Radcliffe speaks out for trans rights admist J.K. Rowling’s Twitter comments
The Boy Who Lived said he didn’t agree with J.K. Rowling’s transphobic remarks as Daniel Radcliffe spoke with the Trevor Project and gave his support to the trans community.
Speaking with the Trevor Project, Daniel Radcliffe gave his support to the trans community in the midst of J.K. Rowling’s transphobic tweets online. Radcliffe, who is very much not on social media, clearly heard about the remarks and took his time to write a letter of support to the community through the Trevor Project, which he’s worked with frequently in the past.
In a letter written by Radcliffe, he explained that his views were not to oppose Rowling but that he felt the need to share his support for the trans community.
"Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm."
What’s sad, to me, is that now we have to expect the cast to speak out against Rowling’s stance. She has made it so the cast and crew we’ve come to love is now set up to either seem to side with her (if they don’t speak out) or they have to make a statement against her.
That, to me, is on Rowling because she’s now opening this door and I’m proud of actors like Katie Leung and Daniel Radcliffe for standing up against the transphobia that Rowling is sharing. Daniel Radcliffe has made a career out of being there for his fans, for the LGBTQIA community, and I’m glad that he is continuing to keep his views out in the world. Nothing but love for Daniel Radcliffe.
