Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD has found its first thread the Chronicoms are after. Can they protect it to save the future of the human race?

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD always seems to know how to up the stakes. Ever since we got through that initial starting hurdle, they’ve been able to pull the rug out from underneath us time and time again.

This final season is no exception.

Here’s the official synopsis for this week’s episode, “Know Your Onions,” courtesy of ABC:

"“With the identity of the timeline-unraveling “thread” revealed, the team’s mission to protect him at all costs leads each agent to question their own values. Is preserving the future of the world as they know it worth the destruction they could prevent?”"

The premiere episode led us down a rabbit hole of what the Chronicoms might be after. FDR was a great pigeon to distract us. But in the end, it’s Wilfred “Freddie” Malick, grandfather of future Head of Hydra, Gideon Malick.

And making our SHIELD compatriots have to save the Hydra bloodline feels like such a perfect, evil twist for the team.

You have to think that our team will be stuck in 1931 through at least this week’s episode. Perhaps they save Freddie’s life in this week’s episode, but Simmons gets a tug on the Zephyr’s systems that lead them down a wormhole and take them to, oh, say, 1947 or so?

Since we already know we have to see Daniel Sousa again, and he’d only be a teenager right now, it’d be silly to have him show up in 1931. Plus then that gives me hope that we’ll see Hayley Atwell as Agent Carter again, which is all anyone really needs in their lives.

And will anyone believe their time travel explanation?
