After months of speculation, CBS finally (!!!) confirmed an official Star Trek spinoff for Captain Christopher Pike is coming to its All Access streaming service.

Prepare yourselves, Star Trek fans, it’s happening! We’re finally, officially getting the Captain Pike spinoff we deserve!

Entitled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds the series will reunite Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn as Captain Christopher Pike, Science Officer Spock and Number One, respectively. The series will take place in the decade before William Shatner’s famous Captain James T. Kirk takes over the U.S.S. Enterprise.

Mount, Peck and Romijn all originally appeared on the second season of Star Trek: Discovery and won rave reviews from Star Trek fans everywhere, particularly Mount’s Captain Pike, who was charming, dashing and completely dedicated to living out the ideals of Starfleet.

(Also, very easy on the eyes, but that’s neither here nor there.)

“Fans fell in love with Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck’s portrayals of these iconic characters when they were first introduced on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ last season,” said Julie McNamara, executive vice president and head of programming at CBS All Access. “This new series will be a perfect complement to the franchise, bringing a whole new perspective and series of adventures to ‘Star Trek.’”

Strange New Worlds will join the nearly half dozen other Star Trek series currently in production, including Discovery, Picard, the animated series Lower Decks, the hiatus minisodes known as Short Treks and the previously confirmed spinoff series focused on Michelle Yeoh’s Captain Phillippa Georgiou.

But if the video announcing its return is anything to go by, Strange New Worlds will have a much more classic Star Trek feel than some of the franchise’s more recent outings, focusing on optimism and adventure.

In the midst of a global pandemic, it feels absolutely right that Star Trek should decide that what we need is a dash of hope in our science fiction, rather than more grimdark despair.

In short: Hit it.

Why we need a Seven of Nine spin-off of Star Trek: Picard. dark. Next

We don’t know when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will air given, well, everything. But we’ll keep you posted.
