Neve Campbell in talks to reprise the role of our favorite final girl in Scream 5
By Shaun Stacy
Neve Campbell is currently in talks to reprise the role of everyone’s favorite final girl, Sidney Prescott, for the upcoming Scream 5.
Surprisingly, there are reports that Neve Campbell is in negotiations to return as Sidney Prescott in the Scream franchise’s upcoming fifth installment. Following the completion of filming 2011’s Scream 4, Neve had stated that she wasn’t sure she would move forward with the franchise if it wasn’t being helmed by Wes Craven, who passed away in 2015. However, never say never.
Campbell recently revealed in an interview with Rotten Tomatoes that the two directors of Scream 5, Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, wrote her a touching letter about Wes Craven and how they were passionate about making a film that he would be proud of. This persuaded Campbell to open up to the possibility of returning to one of her most famous roles to date.
This seems to contradict previous reports that Scream 5 would be a reboot of the franchise, as opposed to a continuation. At the end of Scream 4, Sidney returned to Woodsboro on a book tour and survived yet another bloodbath, this time with her psychotic cousin Jill behind the whole thing as Ghostface. David Arquette and Courteney Cox had also reprised their roles as Dewey Riley and Gail Weathers-Riley, respectively. While there have been rumors Arquette has also begun negotiations to return, there’s no word yet on whether or not Cox will reappear as well. Cox is scheduled to participate in HBO Max’s Friends reunion special later this year, but following the COVID-19 pandemic, it is unclear when the special will air.
The pandemic is also factoring into Campbell’s negotiations, as the actress stated:
"“The timing’s a bit challenging because of COVID. You know, we only started the conversation about a month and a half ago, so it’s going to take some time to figure out how it’s all going to work out … We’re negotiating, so we’ll see.”"
Despite the fact that Scream 4 didn’t exactly kill it at the box office (though it has aged better than Scream 3), nostalgia is playing a big part in the entertainment landscape these days, with reboots and revivals happening left and right. The star power and chemistry of Campbell, Cox, and Arquette combined with a fresh take on the Scream franchise could be just what the horror genre needs.
