Taika Waititi will direct an upcoming Star Wars film, with Krysty Wilson-Cairns co-writing the screenplay with him.

Ever since Taika Waititi directed the first-season finale of The Mandalorian, rumors have been circulating that the award-winning director would also be directing an upcoming Star Wars film. And yesterday, those rumors were confirmed, with the official Star Wars website making the announcement that he’d be helming a movie planned for a theatrical release.

Anyone who has enjoyed Waititi’s previous work in the franchise — and his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has just as much lore — can attest to the fact that he’s a great choice to direct an upcoming project, particularly if that project is the beginnings of another series or saga.

And Waititi’s role isn’t the only one to celebrate. The project will also see 1917 writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns penning the screenplay alongside Waititi, adding a woman’s perspective to the story and doubling up on the talent by adding another Oscar winner to the fray.

Given that the movie is in the early stages of development, little is known about it. The announcement didn’t offer up any plot details, nor did it provide an expected timeline for the project. Still, it’s one of many releases to look forward to from the franchise.

In addition to this new film, there are multiple Star Wars projects in the works for release on Disney+, including one from Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland, which Lucasfilm also confirmed in the web post. Prequel series centered on Rogue One‘s Cassian Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi are also in varying stages of development — and The Mandalorian is preparing for its third season, even ahead of the second season’s release.
