Earlier this week, Michelle Obama announced that a Netflix documentary based on her memoir, Becoming, would be heading our way this May. And honestly? This is exactly the kind of content we need right now.

With many staying indoors — some by choice and others because of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place orders — due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) health crisis, now is the perfect time to catch up on all those films, series, and documentaries that have been stacking on our Netflix queues over the past year. And Michelle Obama announced earlier this week that we have one more documentary to add to the list: Becoming, based off of her 2018 memoir of the same name.

The former First Lady announced the arrival of the documentary on Monday, taking to Twitter to share that it will debut on the streaming platform on May 6. Directed by Nadia Hallgren, Becoming will tell the stories of “amazing people” Michelle Obama met following her memoir’s release. In her Twitter post, she wrote, “I hope you’ll find some inspiration and joy in this film.” And given how much we miss the Obamas, it’s hard to see how we wouldn’t.

After all, we’re basically already tearing up just watching the first clip of Becoming, which shows her discussing her post-First Lady life with a group of young women. Her emphasis on the fact that her life outside of the White House is what truly shaped her has us even more intrigued for this documentary. With any luck, we’ll get to know her and the people around her a bit better as individuals and not just political figures.

And honestly, it’s hard to imagine a better time for Becoming to drop on Netflix. Not only do we all need something to watch, but Michelle Obama inspired us with her powerful presence and drive to do good during her tenure as First Lady. And now she’ll be able to inspire us all over again, even if it’s from outside the White House.

With so much negative news recently, hearing the stories of people actively trying to make the world a better place will no doubt be an uplifting experience. It’ll also, hopefully, inspire viewers to do the same. We’ll need that sort of benevolence following the health crisis, especially as we attempt to return the world to some semblance of normalcy — or perhaps fight to make it better than what we previously considered normal.

dark. Next. These are the two WLW stories to watch on Netflix this week
