Alternative band Evanescence debuts their new single, “Wasted On You,” ahead of the release of its first studio album in nine years.
Evanescence has released their new single, “Wasted On You,” which sees the band embrace a modern lite-rock tone while sticking to its soulful, emo roots. “Wasted On You” is the debut song off the band’s upcoming album The Bitter Truth, the first all-new album they’re releasing in almost a decade.
Previously, Evanescence released a compilation album titled Synthesis, which featured a collection of new covers and updated classic Evanescence songs like “Bring Me To Life.” Earlier this year, they released a well-received cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain,” but this marks the first time in nine years that the band is releasing new original music.

Evanescence first found success in the early 2000s by blending rock with classical melodies, all propelled by front-woman Amy Lee’s angelic, moving voice. Popular songs such as “My Immortal” and “Broken” were included in blockbuster movie soundtracks like Daredevil and The Punisher. Evanescence achieved international stardom and became one of the best female-fronted rock bands in music history.
After about a decade of recording and touring, the band seemed to take a bit of a break in the mid-10s. Lee tried her hand at writing children’s books, and even recorded a children’s album, all of which were a success. Lee would periodically release solo songs, most notably “Speak To Me,” a beautifully touching piece about a mother looking over her child from the afterlife. “Speak To Me” was used as the main theme song for the 2017 film Voice From the Stone, starring Emilia Clarke.
“Wasted On You” sounds like both new and old Evanescence. The arrangements are whimsical, but with an edge. It’s pop facade only cracks when Lee belts out the chorus with lines like “I don’t need drugs/I’m already six feet low/Wasted on you.”
Lee will forever have one of the most remarkably unmistakable voices in music history. Whether she is singing a ballad or breakup rock anthem (“Call Me When Your Sober” is still a personal favorite), you will know its her voice because of the goosebumps on your arms. If “Wasted On You” is a sign of things to come, Evanescence could be set to release the comeback album of the year.
