This week, Netflix is dropping what amounts to a smorgasbord of fresh content on its platform from Camila Mendes’ latest project, Dangerous Lies, to Nadiya Hussain’s cooking show, Nadiya’s Time to Eat, to Ryan Murphy’s highly anticipated limited series, Hollywood.
But taking top seed for this week’s What to Watch on Netflix post are two WLW stories coming to the streaming platform: A Secret Love and The Half of It.
Check out the trailers for A Secret Love and The Half of It below.
A Secret Love
Produced by Ryan Murphy and executive produced by Jason Blum, A Secret Love is a documentary about Terry Donahue and Pat Henschel’s 65 years together as a couple. The two met in 1947 when Donahue was playing catcher for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Yes, the same baseball league immortalized in the 1992 film, A League of the Own, which will be immortalized again when Amazon takes its swing at a series by the same name.
As a professional baseball player, Donahue was a recognized figure. She was also an inspiration to young women who wished to defy societal expectations as she had. There was, however, a secret she carried throughout her life, and that was the love she shared with her partner, Pat, a woman her family and co-workers knew as her friend and roommate.
A Secret Love documents Terry and Pat’s lives as the decades pass, their love grows, and their secret remains hidden even to their loved ones. It’s through this documentary that they tell their story and share their experiences as women living and loving one another in the ’40s, and well into the next century, as society slowly starts to change and grow more accepting and tolerant.
A Secret Love will be available to stream on Netflix on April 29.
The Half of It
From writer and director Alice Wu, The Half of It is a reimagining of the tale of Cyrano de Bergerac with a twist. Instead of a sword-wielding poet as our hero, meet Ellie Chu. She doesn’t have a world-renowned nose, but she does have a gift for words and has transformed that gift into a side hustle.
Being a straight A student can get you far when it comes to opportunities, but it doesn’t pay the bills, and Ellie does what she can to help at home. If that means writing papers for students in need of a decent or above-average grade, then so be it. But it’s not until football player Paul Munsky hires her to write love notes that Ellie’s life starts to become less about her intelligence and more about who she is.
Paul likes Aster Flores. She’s the quintessential teen romance It-girl with a minister for a father and a quarterback for a boyfriend. To win her heart, Paul opts for love notes — but since he’s not exactly a wordsmith, he turns to Ellie. The more Ellie writes for him, the closer she and Paul become, and it’s that closeness that leads Paul to the discovery that Ellie likes Aster, too.
The Half of It is a coming-of-age story centered on friendship, love, and identity in a small town in Washington state.
The Half of It will be available to stream on Netflix May 1.
