Sony Pictures has announced new release dates for Spider-Man 3 and Into the Spider-Verse 2, both of which have been delayed due to the health crisis.
As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis continues, more and more movies have seen their release dates pushed back due to halts in production. Sony’s Spider-Man films are some of the latest to receive new release dates, with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 3 and the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel each being delayed by several months.
The third Spider-Man installment, which will see Holland’s character coping with the aftermath of Mysterio’s disastrous announcement at the end of Far From Home, will now arrive in theaters on November 1, 2021. It was originally slated for a July 16 release date that year, but it’s been moved into Doctor Strange 2‘s slot. Marvel Studios has moved Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness back, likely to make up for the Spider-Man delay. (Does this mean we can expect the third installment to affect the Sorcerer Supreme’s next adventure somehow?)
Meanwhile, Into the Spider-Verse 2 has been pushed from April 8, 2022 to October 7, 2022. This sequel will continue the animated story of Miles Morales, whose Spider-Man was such a hit that his film received an Oscar last year. While the plot of the sequel remains a mystery, there’s plenty of ground the film could cover — particularly when one considers just how many alternate realities and different versions of Spider-Man were introduced in the first installment.
It’s unfortunate that fans will have to wait a bit longer to see these series continued, but the delay for either film could certainly have been longer all things considered. Of course, Spider-Man 3‘s schedule change also impacts the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4 calendar. But Marvel Studios has already pushed back many of its upcoming blockbusters amidst production delays anyway.
With any luck, this will be the only time Sony needs to readjust its schedule. There’s no definite timeline for when Hollywood could begin production again, so it’s best not to think of any of these dates as set in stone just yet — but we’re also veering on the positive side and hoping we’ll see both versions of Spidey sooner rather than later.
