Wynonna Earp star says season 4 will be “from the heart”
By Shaun Stacy
At this weekend’s virtual HomeCon, Wynonna Earp cast members gathered to talk about what we can expect from the upcoming fourth season.
This weekend’s HomeCon featured a virtual Wynonna Earp discussion panel that included cast members Dominique Provost-Chalkley, Kat Barrell, Tim Rozon, and Megan Follows. The cast members took turns talking about how they’ve adjusted to the new normal of self-quarantining and social-distancing, the upcoming fourth season, and commenting on those adorable early audition tapes that have been circling around the internet.
Barrell and Provost-Chalkley said that self-quarantining wasn’t that big of a transition for them, since they are both an only child and used to being very independent. While Rozon broke the news that his wife recently gave birth to a baby boy, so he’s actually relishing the forced time at home. Like most television shows that were in production, Wynonna Earp was in the middle of filming season four when the coronavirus pandemic happened, halting any further work on the project. The cast revealed that they had managed to film the first six episodes of the season before being forced to shut down.
When asked to give two-word descriptions of the upcoming season, the answers varied among the cast-mates. Provost-Chalkley, struggling to find two exact words, went with “refined.” Barrell said season four is a “love story,” though she didn’t elaborate on exactly who’s love story. Rozon chimed in saying that is was “overdue,” addressing the fact that season three ended on a huge cliffhanger in September of 2018 but production on season four didn’t even start until December of 2019. Following up Barrell’s “love story” description, Rozon added that season four would be “from the heart.”
The cast then hilariously compared audition stories, revealing that a few of them had actually auditioned for different roles than the ones they ended up playing. Rozon stated that he had actually auditioned for the role of Xavier Dolls (the role eventually went to Shamier Anderson) first, before being cast as the immortal ladies’ man Doc Holliday. Barrell talked about how she had originally auditioned for both Waverly Earp and Wynonna Earp before landing the role of Nicole Haught. Bummed that there was no footage circulating the internet of Barrell’s audition, show creator Emily Andras live texted pictures to Barrell of herself during the Waverly audition.
Provost-Chalkley also had a heartfelt moment when she touched upon how the show had helped her come to terms with her own true self, coming out as queer last month. She believed that it wasn’t a coincidence that she landed this role at this time in her life, and was thankful to be surrounded by such wonderful people supporting her. Provost-Chalkley comes off as a somewhat shy person, but you could tell that she is strong-willed at the same time.
Wynonna Earp is currently available for streaming on both Netflix and the SYFY channel.
