Grey’s Anatomy season 16 finale preview: DeLuca’s diagnosis
By Meg Dowell
This Grey’s Anatomy season finale won’t answer all of our questions, but DeLuca may have the official diagnosis we’ve been waiting for.
There’s always a giant tangle of storylines to wrap up whenever a show approaches its season finale. Considering Grey’s Anatomy is ending this season four episodes early, this week’s episode might feel even more chaotic … maybe even a little incomplete.
Here’s what we do know: Teddy is going to inch even closer to a choice. Whether or not she chooses Owen or Tom might be left up to next season. She could also choose neither of them, which at this point seems like a very likely possibility. Can’t blame her for not wanting to deal with either of their baggage no matter how heartbreaking.
Amelia will also finally have this baby that’s been on all our minds since the season started — or she’ll come extremely close to doing so, anyway. We don’t know if it’s going to go well or if the baby will be born healthy. As much as she deserves a complication-free delivery and healthy kid, there’s always a chance something will go wrong. With Amelia, something always does.
And then there’s the Richard situation. While most of the doctors on his case are convinced he has Alzheimer’s disease, neither Meredith or DeLuca want to settle for that until they know for sure. As always, though, it looks like DeLuca will take his good intentions to the extreme and cause trouble even if he does end up having the right answer.
Since this is an unfortunately unconventional season finale, it’s possible we’ll walk away from this week’s episode with more questions than answers. But that’s just something we’ll have to accept knowing everyone did the best they could despite the circumstances. We might not find out what’s actually wrong with Richard yet, for example — that might have been reserved for episode 22 or 23.
There’s also a chance the season won’t end on as big of a cliffhanger as we’re used to, since those are almost always planned for midseason and season finales, and this episode is only acting as a finale.
So you’ll either feel satisfied or quite the opposite depending on your preferences. But you can at least guarantee some questions will be answered. At the very least, DeLuca is bound to bring up a possible diagnosis no one else has thought of (even if we don’t get confirmation as to whether or not he might be right), and we’ll have that to speculate about while we wait for new episodes to drop … whenever that might be.
The season 16 finale of Grey’s Anatomy premieres Thursday, April 9 on ABC.
