Wonder Woman: 1984 release date pushed from June to August
Warner Bros. has delayed its Wonder Woman sequel from June until August due to the coronavirus pandemic sweeping the globe.
Numerous movie debuts and television premieres have been pushed back in lieu of the current novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, and Wonder Woman: 1984 is the latest film to see a change in release date due to the pandemic. Despite speculation that the movie might have a straight-to-digital release, Warner Bros. announced yesterday that the sequel will now hit theaters on August 14 instead of June 5.
This delay follows the rescheduling of several other blockbusters planned for the late spring and early summer season, including Marvel Studios’ Black Widow and Disney’s live-action Mulan. Given that movie theaters around the globe have been forced to close due to restrictions intended to lessen the spread of the disease, it makes sense many of these films will need to
In a statement obtained by Variety, Warner Bros. Pictures chairman Toby Emmerich said, “When we greenlit Wonder Woman 1984, it was with every intention to be viewed on the big screen and are excited to announce that Warner Bros. Pictures will be bringing the film to theatres on Aug. 14.”
Director Patty Jenkins also took to Twitter to announce the shift in dates, adding to “pray for better times for all by then.” Given that health officials are suggesting the virus could be here for several months, we’ll have to hope things will be operating more normally by the time the Wonder Woman sequel arrives.
Wonder Woman: 1984 film’s trailer suggests will see Diana in an ’80s setting, fighting against Pedro Pascal’s villain, Maxwell Lord, and the Cheetah. The DC fans are in for another action-packed ride with this movie — meaning there’s plenty to look forward to whenever it does arrive.
