With movie theaters closing and the box office at a standstill, will Warner Bros. send Wonder Woman: 1984 straight to digital?

With the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) more or less putting the entertainment industry at a standstill, studios have been forced to either push back their blockbusters for the spring and summer seasons or send them straight to digital outlets. And according to The Wrap, Warner Bros. is currently having this debate about Wonder Woman: 1984, which was meant to debut this June. With the future becoming increasingly uncertain, however, could the Wonder Woman sequel see a straight-to-digital release?

Well, despite the rumors, it seems more likely the studio is hoping to proceed as planned. Despite reports to the contraryIndieWire wrote that Warner Bros. is still intending a theatrical release for the movie — and, as of right now, it’s still set to arrive on June 5. Whether or not that will change as the situation surrounding the current pandemic does remains to be seen, but the studio has yet to officially postpone the film’s release date.

Warner Bros. itself has made no official statements about the movie’s debut either, although the studio did send several of its spring releases — including Emma, The Hunt, and The Invisible Man — to VOD platforms following movie theater closures. Of course, none of these were likely to make as much at the box office as Wonder Woman: 1984, and all of them were already arriving in theaters as this outbreak unfolded. The circumstances are a bit different for the upcoming DC film, and given that a theatrical release would be a smarter move financially, it makes sense that Warner Bros. would choose that option.

There are reportedly talks, however, of pushing Wonder Woman: 1984 to August. Again, nothing is set in stone as of yet, but director Patty Jenkins and executive producer Charles Roven appear to be on board with this plan. We’ll have to wait for an official announcement to see what Warner Bros. decides to do with the next step in Diana’s journey — but the chances we’ll see her grace the big screen once more seem to be high.
