Sony finally revealed more details about its next-generation console, the PS5. With the specs now available, we can’t wait until it releases!

PlayStation fans have been waiting for news on the PS5 for what feels like years. Finally, on March 18, Sony revealed new details about the system in a live stream, practicing social distancing as best as possible while making the announcement.

In this video, Sony revealed the specs of the system, but it didn’t go beyond the technical details. No games were announced or preview footage shown, but for the super hardcore gamers and nerds out there, this is a treasure trove of knowledge and excitement. Because it sounds like the PS5 is sparing no expense.

Sony revealed so much in its video, and you can read all about it on the company’s PlayStation blog. But we wanted to touch on some of the more exciting highlights. Let’s get to it!

  • Load Time: The solid state drive that will be in the PS5 reduces the load time for a game to 0.27 seconds per gigabyte. Currently the PS4’s SSD averages 20 seconds per gigabyte.
  • Less Load Time: Sony’s goal for the PS5 is 5.5GB/s for 100x faster data loads across the whole system. The company has managed this by building a custom flash controller to cut back on bottlenecking. Don’t expect to see a lot of lag.
  • The SSD: That solid state drive will also give designers “freedom” and won’t end up sabotaging a developer’s vision for a game. Which means better quality all around for the player.
  • The RAM: The PS5 will have 16GB of GDDR6 RAM.
  • Backwards compatibility: This one has been a big thing for the Xbox One. Sony has included the log sets from the previous PS4 and PS4 Pro consoles in the PS5. No backwards compatibility necessary.
  • The Audio: PS5’s lead system architect Mark Cerny said that the Dolby Atmos system wouldn’t have met their goals, so they created their own solution.
  • Also, it will be 8k compatible.

Again, these are just the 10,000-foot highlights of everything new that was announced. If you’re a tech guru and want to get down and dirty with the details, Sony’s blog is your best bet.

There still isn’t a release date or a price yet for the console. And the only game that’s been confirmed is Godfall. We’ll have more specifics for you as soon as Sony makes another announcement.
